Salar X-Shark KX101 Headset Review

With my Superlux EVO HD683 breaking down, I thought I’d try a gaming headset for a change. I am very particular about my sounds. Reading online, I saw that a gaming headsets with good in-game sounds will probably not sound as good with music. I got the Salar X-Shark KX101 because I saw it on sale in Lazada and it has some nice reviews.

I have never heard of the brand Salar when I saw this, but I like to try out different brands of headphones.

Unboxed

Came to me like this.

Unlike my previous Lazada purchase, this one was delivered via Lazada Express. What I like about it? I got a text message asking if I would be there to pick up the item. I replied that I wasn’t but someone would be there. That was all to it.

A little worrying

Inspecting the package, it looked like it was slightly open. Nothing seems to have gotten out.

Removing the plastic and opening the box, the strap’s “GAMING” greets you.

Salar X-Shark KX101 ALL OF IT

This is EVERYTHING in the box. I was hoping for maybe a manual or something. The small pamphlet is in Chinese except for warnings on the bottom. The headset is very light.

The headset

Salar X-Shark KX101 2 wire

The wire is covered with a bright green and black fiber of sorts. Love the color. Also helps me figure out which wire is which. This headset has a 3.5mm jack for both earphones and mic. The two jacks are split a couple of inches up. This is a little problematic for me since I plug my headphones to the stereo. I ended up using a spare cord extender for the mic.

Salar X-Shark KX101 speaker cup size

I took a photo of the speaker cup with a ruler to show how big it is. Wearing them, they completely cover my ears. There is one complaint I have for this. The speakers don’t fit snugly. They are very loose on me so I added some sponge inside the speaker cushion. It got a little tighter but not as tight as I’d want.

Here is another photo to show how high the head band is without extending.
You can also see the volume control and the mic switch. Very nice setting to have on the headset.

So sound-wise. Voices sound good. I think the mids are pretty good but since the speaker cups don’t fit snugly on me, other sounds messes with it. I tried the mic and I was told that it came out clear and that my typing could be heard. I’ll need to see if that is something I can fix within the setting or positioning.

Salar X-Shark KX101 is definitely not going to replace my EVO HD681 when it comes to listening to music but this isn’t so bad for gaming. I’m ready to yell at n00bs haha.

Salar Headset 2 years after:

Just wanted to update that the this headphones lasted me a year. It did not have the sound my EVO had BUT my Salar cans took a lot of beating. It fell off the desk a lot. The tell tale signs of its death was the loss of sound on one side then eventually no sound at all. I now see why having loose headphones is a good thing. It lets air in. My EVO got me into some bad ear infections and parts of it got ripped or cracked a year in. Really nice sounds tho. Trying to clean the EVO felt like it would break it though. I was able to clean my Salar twice.

  1. EVO HD681 cost around P1.5k up in lazada while Salar X-SHARK KX101 cost only for P299. No wonder you won’t replace it. The margin on both of the prices vary significantly. You might also consider this as margin of their quality.

    1. Yeah. Although the EVO itself surprised me too. I was looking at a Marshall headphone that was around 4k before I decided to try the EVO.
Sounded the same to me at 1/4th the price.

    1. I recall it is a PC Headset. I don’t have a console to try it on I’m afraid. The jacks are split into headphone and mic for it as well so I am not sure you’ll be able to use the mic.

    1. Hi,
Sure but I am not sure how much I will be able to answer about this headset. It has been a while. It broke maybe a year or so ago. The right ear decided to malfunction.

  2. Thanks for an honest man. I appreciate that you have also updated this post on how the headset still functions after 2 years of usage. I will have one of these soon.
