I asked my cousin abroad if she could buy me a white gel pen. She ended up sending me several different kinds white pens and not only gel!
I mostly use my white pens to put highlights or edges to watercolor paintings. Some videos online show people use them for calligraphy on dark paper. By far my favorite example of white pen use in watercolor is by artist Silvia Pelissero aka agnescecile.
I remember asking her where she got it and she told me she bought it from Italy. I went on a hunt after that. Before the pens, I either used a fine brush with white poster color or correction pen.
White pen – Gel
- Sakura Jelly Roll
Definitely my favorite of the bunch, this pen feels smooth when
you write. The white color for this one is the most opaque and thin enough to feel like a normal gel pen. I have seen some calligraphy
pop up stores sell this but I do not remember how much. I got
this from Tokyu Hands Singapore. (Been to one in Japan and it’s
a crafter’s HEAVEN.)
I have recently seen Jelly Rolls in SM stationary area but they don’t have white ones yet. - Uni-ball Signo AngelicThis one is less smooth and feels like a normal ball pen. It is just a little transparent. I used this for a while but I used 2-3 layers to get the white
I wanted. National Bookstore has this is a their branches. Uni-ball also had a thicker 0.7mm version. - Ranger White OpaqueI had problems with this white pen. I tried to write over and over and still got this effect. I have to turn the pen to constantly have ink coming out. It is also obvious that the ink pools on the sides. The pack I got had two pens of the same color and BOTH ended up like this.
Ink
- Recollections OpaqueThis one is more of a marker and has a translucent looking ink. No problems with writing and dried fast on the paper I used. This white pen is thick so I have not used this. I recall seeing this in calligraphy store also.
- Sakura Pen TouchAnother marker type but this is the push-down type. To get ink
on the tip, you have to push the tip down. I might have pushed too much and got that ink pooling at the end of the strokes. My experience with push downs are that they can be iffy. Old stock may have inks that have hardened or maybe separated inside the pen. This one came out ok.
I have seen this one in some National Bookstores. I have also tried something like this from Schneider but I suspect the stock was old.
That is all the white pens I currently have. I just realized that I should have taken the pictures of the pen themselves. I’ll add that when I get to my camera!
