Diamond Boxes – How to (with slit locks)

diamond boxes how toWe were given some interestingly shaped boxes as piggy banks.
Thought these diamond boxes would be a nice Christmas wrapping idea so I tried to make some.

Wrapping 3 in a ribbon makes for a cute present. The shape reminded me of those Cream-O boxes I used to buy.

How to make DiamonD Boxes with slit locks

Materials:

  1. Scissors
  2. Cutter
  3. Ruler
  4. Pen\pencil (I am using a chalk marker)
  5. Glue or thin double sided tape
  6. Cardstock with design you like (Found mine in the scrap booking section of a store.)
  7. Box template (download)
    Template is 8.8in x 10.6in; Box when folded is 2in x 6in x 2in
  8. Crafting cutter board (or something to protect the surface for when you use the cutter.)

Step 1:

(If you want, you can also draw the folding marks in for use later.)

If you plan to use the cutter, I suggest you use a thick ruler to keep your cuts straight. A thick ruler prevents the blade from going up the ruler.

Step 3:

diamond boxes how toUsing the template as reference, add the extra cuts on segments 1 and 3.
If you are having problems making the cut on the fold on the 1st segment, you can do that once the box is almost done. (Step 6)

One segment 3 I make the cut 0.5cm.

Step 4:

Using the template Folding the cardstock. I used the ruler to help my folds straighten. The fold for segment 1 is a little tricky with the diagonal flaps. What I did was just crease it partially but putting the ruler in front and pushing from the back. I fix the folds on the other side using my fingers.

Step 5:

Add some glue on the 5th segment then stick it under the 1st segment. In second image below, I just held it but you can also use a paper clip or a bobby pin while they dry. You can also use thin double sided tape.

Step 6:

If you had a hard time drawing the extra cut for the flap in the 1st segment, you can close the box and just measure from there. I marked it lightly using a pencil then cut it using a cutter.

Step 7:

..and you’re done!

I made 3 diamond boxes and put them together using a ribbon to make a little bundle.
